1. Small/Medium Self-Made Tank Systems

d. Holding Water System (Figure 4)

In the holding water system, the drain valve is kept closed, holding the water in the tanks. When the drain valve is opened the water drains from all the tanks. The tanks are rinsed, then refilled after closing the drain valve. Once the drain valve is closed, the water level must be monitored during filling to avoid overflow.

Tanks must be frequently flushed and filled to minimize toxins and waste from building up in the water. We clean our tanks daily. It takes approximately 1.5 hours to clean 4 racks of tanks. We find that if we feed on Tues, Sat, then the tanks can be cleaned Mon, Wed, Fri, and the adult frogs do quite well. Juvenile frogs should be fed daily and cleaned daily.

A small drain filter in each tank keeps frogs and larger froglets from escaping down the drain.  Note:This system will not work for tadpoles or small froglets. They are small enough to escape through the drain filter, and too delicate to withstand tank flushing and cleaning.
