X. tropicalis Database

Using Filemaker Pro 5.5, I designed the Harland Xenopus Database to track and organize husbandry and mating information specific to our frog colony. You will need to modify the files to suit your needs. A basic knowledge of Filemaker Pro is required to do this. All the information you need to modify the files can be found in the Filemaker Pro User Handbook.

We are making the Harland Xenopus Database available for download for others to use and draw ideas from. Downloading the files assumes you have read and agreed to the License Agreement for the Harland Xenopus Database.

This database is a work in progress. As further modifications and improvements are made, we will post the new files to this site. Comments and suggestions are welcome, however we do not have the resources to provide technical support.

A brief description of the files and their use follows.

Use the Main Menu file to access most of the other the files. Get brief descriptions of each file by clicking the question marks. The “Transgenic”, “Tank Transfer”, and “Morbidity“ files are not available in the Main Menu, but are accessed from the Frog ID file. The Maintenance file is accessible only directly and not from the Main Menu.

Use the Frog ID file to enter information about your parent or founder frogs and assign them Individual ID numbers. Then use the Mating ID file to set up matings between parent frogs, and enter mating details. Once you have a viable clutch growing up, enter the Offspring information in the Mating ID file. This will automatically create a record for this clutch in the Frog ID file. If the clutch is housed in multiple tanks, use the “New Clutch Tank” button in Frog ID to create new records for the clutch. Enter the new Tank number for each record. Keep track of the number of frogs in the tank by manually entering the number in the “# in Tank” field. The database will automatically keep track of the number of frogs in each clutch, as long as the number entered in the ”# in Tank” field is accurate.
As the clutch matures, create Individual records from the Clutch records using the “Create New Individual For This Clutch” button. This will assign Individual numbers to
frogs you have selected for further study, and allow you to give them a new tank number.

You can enter information about a phenotype seen in a Clutch in the Clutch Phenotype field. This will automaticaly create a “CP” (clutch Phenotype) alert next to the clutch number wherever it appears. The same is true for the Individual Phenotype field. Information entered here will cause “IP” to appear next to the Individual number.

The “Ship” and “Tank Transfer” buttons in the Frog ID file allow you to track movements of frogs into, out of and within your group of frogs. The “Tank Death” button allows you to enter information on Clutch and Individual frog death. The “Maturity Data” button allows you to track growth information such as appearance of the first froglet in a clutch, first nuptial pad etc. Entries made in these layouts become records in the “Shipping”, “Tank Transfer”, “Clutch Mortality”, and “Maturity” files, respectively. You can add details to each record in these files.

The Re-mate buttons in the “Frog ID” and “Mating” files allow you to add or view existing Mating reminders in the” Mating Schedule”(Mating Log) file. Use the Mating list to keep track of matings which need to be done. The “Mating Due” field is based on the last HCG date of the Individual frog. It will automatically set the” next mate date” for a female frog to 30 days after her last HCG dose, and to 15 days after the last HCG dose for a male. You can change the date as you like.

The “Location” button in the “Frog ID” file will take you to the Tank record in the “Tank” file. From here you can print tank cards. Our cards are printed on 4 by 6 index cards. You will have to modify the Tank card layout if you desire a different size.
The “Matings” button in “Frog ID” file will take you to the mating Records file, and show a list of all the mating records for an individual frog.
The “Parents” button will show you the Mating record for the creation of the clutch or Individual you are viewing.
The “Find Sibs” button will show you all the clutches having the same parents as the Clutch you are viewing.

Use the Tank ID database to enter details about your tanks. Use the Diet ID file to enter diet information for each tank. This tank and diet information will now automatically appear in the Frog ID files when you enter a tank number.

The Experiments file can be used to make notes on experiments involving a Clutch. Create a new Experiment file for a clutch using the “Experiments” button in the Frog ID file record. The Transgenics log helps keep track of Transgenic animals. Add these animals to the list through their Frog ID record, by clicking on the “Transgenics” button.

The Morbidity file can be used to track illness and treatment of individual frogs. It is not available on the Main Menu, but must be accessed directly from the list of files.

Modify the Maintenance and Water Quality files to log husbandry tasks done on a regular basis.

The MouSeek database designed by Caleb Davis at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX has been very useful for design and scripting ideas. The members of the Filemaker Café (http://www.maclane.com/) have been invaluable in answering my numerous questions.
